Bridges for Billy Goats

Over the last few weeks children have been focusing on teamwork in their Forest School sessions. As their confidence and collaborative approach has developed so they are now ready to be given more freedom. They now can choose who they work with and the theme becomes more open ended rather than a set challenge. In early years they have played lots of boundary and orientation games and had their stick safety training so are now ready to have more autonomy. Inspired by their music lessons, which have focused on nursery rhymes, we introduced the story of the Three Billy Goats Gruff. This lends itself beautifully to all sorts of Billy Goat related activities but this week the children decided bridge building was the most important thing. It was a hive of activity with some really impressive builds. Many classes decided to join their bridges together to make a trail, the story was re-enacted and we saw some quite scary trolls appear. The Year 6 Outdoor Workers were their to lend a hand and got the children testing things out as they built, making sure things were safe for all ages. Though this was to be the focus for early years some of the older children have got wind of it and asked to if they could get involved so expect more bridge building next week and maybe a clay goat or two.

The Risk Principle: Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.

Article 31: We all have the right to rest, relax and play.
