This week in Reception we celebrated National Nursery Rhyme Week 2025, and the children had a wonderful time learning this year’s five rhymes: Sing a Song of Sixpence, Humpty Dumpty, When I Was One (I Played the Drum), I Hear Thunder, and Two Little Dickie Birds.
Throughout the week the children took part in a range of creative, hands-on activities linked to each rhyme. Our pirate-themed learning for When I Was One was especially popular: the children counted gold coins, drew their own treasure maps, used scissors carefully to cut out pirate hats, and even built large pirate ships outside in the construction area. For Humpty Dumpty, we worked together to build walls and used our cutting skills to make paper bricks and egg shapes, creating colourful Humpty Dumpty pictures to display in class. The role play area became our very own Nursery Rhyme Theatre, where the children acted out their favourite rhymes using props, puppets, and lots of imagination. They also enjoyed experimenting with body percussion for I Hear Thunder and exploring storytelling and number skills through Sing a Song of Sixpence.
