Over the past two weeks, the children in Year 6 have been doing work from the book ‘Varmints’ – although they have not actually seen the book yet and have done all of their work from the book trailer below.
The first lesson involved thinking about what a varmint could be and making links between other words that sounded familiar like vermin. After this, we have explored the themes in the video and the change from the calm and peaceful meadow to the misery of the concrete jungle. The children have then started to write setting descriptions that show the change in mood and atmosphere – using powerful language and incorporating similes, personification and alliteration.
