Recycling in Reception

This week, Reception have been learning about recycling and finding out why this is important for our environment.

We began by reading the story ‘Somebody swallowed Stanley’ by Sarah Robert’s which tells the story of a plastic bag who is swallowed by various animals in the ocean. After reading the story, we discussed why it is dangerous for plastic to be in the ocean and what we could do to prevent this. The children agreed that recycling is very important to protect wildlife and our environment.

Later, we looked at different recycled materials before organising them into categories. We looked at plastic, cardboard, fabrics, glass and cans. We then thought about different creations we could make using the recycling we have in our cut and stick area. The children all enjoyed coming up with ninja turtles and sharks using toilet tubes, robots, rockets and even a mermaid in a fish tank.
