Creating Sentences with Personification

Today, the children learnt about the figurative language technique of personification.

Next week, the children in Year 5 will be writing a setting description based on the book Oranges in No Man’s Land. The children have worked hard so far to create descriptive sentences in their sentence stacker lessons over the course of this week.

In our grammar lesson, the children learnt about personification, understanding why it might be used to create desired effects in creative writing. The children looked at different examples of personification within a poem, giving non-living objects, ideas and animals human/living qualities.

During our lesson, the children had the task of matching different word cards to a variety of picture cards to use personification. The children used these as a prompts to write sentences on their whiteboards, to give the objects human qualities. The children also worked hard to add features such as fronted adverbials, adjectives and adverbs to make their sentences more descriptive.
