Festivals of Light

In topic this week. the children have learnt all about two festivals – Diwali and Bonfire Night! The children have enjoyed learning about two different festivals that have a similarity of light.

Diwali

Our first festival this week we celebrated on the 4th November which was Diwali. This is also known as the Festival of Light. The children enjoyed learning about a different culture and religion and how they celebrate. We made our own Diva lamps, Rangoli patterns and Mehndi hand designs. We read the story ‘Dipal’s Diwali’ to understand the process of the festival and how it is celebrated over five days.

Bonfire Night

The children thoroughly enjoyed learning about Bonfire night and talking about their experiences outside of school. We listened to a story of how Bonfire night started, learning all about Guy Fawkes and the Houses of Parliament. We have completed many different activities such as; firework painting with marbles, bonfire painting with our hands spaghetti and glitter, learning about firework safety with Fireman Sam, and making our own edible sparklers using breadsticks, chocolate and sprinkles. We had a visit to forest school too where we sat around the campfire to drink hot chocolate with marshmallows and squirty cream – it was delicious and warmed us up in this cold weather!
