Tiny Seeds

The Tiny Seed

We have had a lovely week in Nursery this week. We have carried on our topic of ‘growing’ ‘changing’ and ‘enchanted gardens’ and looked at how to grow seeds. Our main story has been ‘The Tiny Seed’. The children have enjoyed exploring different kinds of seeds in fruits and vegetables and using tweezers to remove them and compare sizes. We then grew our own cress seeds in plant pots, which have now been taken home. We have already grown sunflowers in spring term, and the children have loved looking at the progress pictures of each other’s sunflowers and comparing sizes. Some children’s sunflowers have now flowered! Our class beans now have shoots and roots, which the children have compared to theirs at home. We have also now planted these to watch the progress. When looking at gardens, we have discussed what we have in our own gardens and what we would like to have. We looked at different gardens and then produced some beautiful artwork with the flowers, plants and twigs that the children brought in from home.

For our maths this week, we have looked at how we grow just like plants. We read the story ‘Once We Were Giants’ and discussed the different stages e.g. baby, toddler, child, teenager, adult, elderly. The children loved comparing what they couldn’t do when they were a baby to what they can do now. We had great fun looking at our own baby and toddler photos. Once we muddled them up, it was tricky to work out who’s photo was who. However, we managed to order our photos from the smallest – biggest and shortest – tallest.
