In Maths, Year Two have been learning all about measuring. They have measured the height, length and mass of different objects, as well as the volume of liquid in containers.
To begin, the children measured the height and length of classroom objects using centimetres. They made sure to line the edge of the ruler up with the edge of each object to ensure an accurate measurement. They then compared centimetres and metres, discussing which unit of measure would be most appropriate for different objects. The children identified items around the classroom that were shorter than a metre and those that were longer. They then investigated the length of the classroom using metre sticks and rulers, finding it to be approximately 7 m and 64 cm.
Next, the children measured the mass of objects—how heavy or light something is. They held 1 g and 1 kg weights to predict which unit would be most suitable for measuring classroom objects. They then used weights and balance scales to find the mass of items they use every day.
Finally, the children explored volume and capacity. Did you know that capacity refers to how much a container can hold, whereas volume is the amount it is currently holding? The boys and girls were fascinated to discover that the same volume of liquid could fit into two different containers without overflowing. The children explained that although the shape and size of the containers were different, their capacity was the same.
