In Science this week, Year 5 have been learning about human development and life stages.
The children explored the different stages of life, including prenatal development, babyhood, childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. They discussed how humans grow and change over time and what makes each stage unique.
As part of our learning, the children investigated how babies grow during their first year of life. They examined data showing the average weight of babies from 0–12 months and compared the differences between baby boys and baby girls. This helped the class practise interpreting scientific data and spotting patterns.
The class also looked closely at the different types of development that happen throughout life. We explored how development can be grouped into:
Physical development – how our bodies grow and change
Cognitive development – how our thinking and learning develops
Social development – how we interact and build relationships
Emotional development – how we understand and manage feelings
Language development – how we communicate and express ourselves
The children worked hard to link each life stage to these different areas of development, helping them understand how humans grow not just physically, but in many other important ways too.
It has been a fascinating topic and the children have enjoyed learning more about how people change and develop throughout their lives.
