It has been STEM Week in school this week, and Year 5 have been busy taking part in a range of exciting and hands-on activities.
On Tuesday, the children were introduced to their Flying Vehicle challenge. They were tasked with designing a futuristic plane that focused on being quieter and more environmentally friendly. The children explored the history of aviation, learned how planes are engineered to fly, and examined examples of futuristic designs before creating their own imaginative concepts.
On Wednesday, Year 5 welcomed a visit from Dr Bunce, who introduced the children to Spheros. Using iPads, the children learned how to programme code to control the movement of their Spheros around the room. They particularly enjoyed choosing different colours and emojis to display as part of their designs.
On Friday, the children were visited by representatives from Nissan and were amazed to discover how many cars are produced at the Sunderland plant each day. They enjoyed learning about the history of the plant and watching videos that showed how it has grown and developed over time.
Overall, Year 5 have had a fantastic STEM Week, challenging themselves to think critically about how and why things are designed and built, and how these ideas come together to produce real-world outcomes.
