When it’s early in the term and the children are young we introduce boundary games to help them orientate themselves around the Forest School site.
As the years progress these games can be adapted to age and subject to help with activities like tree and bird identification. The Year 6 Outdoor Workers are learning to run the games that they know so well and the younger children are thrilled to have the big boys and girls to play with. It encourages responsibility and confidence in all ages. Here you see them playing Sticky Feet, a game that aims to bring children back to a designated point from any activity. Followed by You’re Only Safe If. In this instance you are only safe if you are in a particular area. These games get everyone moving and are used in all Year Groups. They enable management of large groups whilst learning and having fun.
The Long-Term Principle: Forest School is a long-term process of frequent and regular sessions in a woodland or natural environment, rather than a one-off visit. Planning, adaptation, observations and reviewing are integral elements of Forest School.
