This week in Reception we have been learning all about the Hindu festival of Holi. We began by sharing the lovely book Festival of Colours by Shirin Shrestha Sehgal, which follows two children as they prepare for and celebrate Holi with their family and friends. The children learned that Holi is a joyful spring festival celebrating the victory of good over evil and the end of winter. People mark the occasion by offering prayers, enjoying traditional foods and sweets, and covering one another in bright colours as they gather in the streets to celebrate. In class, we explored colour in lots of creative ways: the children painted spring flowers using powder paints and learned how to mix colours, and outside we used colourful scarves and pom‑poms to create our own Holi-inspired colour festival, dancing and having fun together. We also enjoyed splat painting outdoors, watching the colours burst and blend across the paper. In literacy, we read a poem all about colours and then wrote our own sentences inspired by the vibrant shades of Holi. It has been a wonderfully bright and busy week.
