Fantastic Fractions

This term, Year Two have been learning about fractions. They have explored what different fractions look like by colouring shapes and finding a fraction of an amount.

The children started by identifying that fractions are made up of equal parts. They looked at different ways of dividing shapes and discussed which had equal parts and which had unequal parts.

Next, the children explored one half. Did you know, a half is one of two equal parts? When the shape was divided into more than two equal pieces, the children used their half facts to colour the correct number of parts. The boys and girls also used their knowledge of place value to help them to find half of larger numbers.

After that, it was time to investigate quarters. The children found out that when we are finding a quarter we need to make four equal parts. They explored finding one quarter of shapes and of different amounts. After that, the children looked at two quarters and three quarters of shapes and amounts. Did you know that two quarters is equal to one half?

Finally, the children learnt about thirds. They were able to identify that one third is one of three equal parts. The children then found one third of a shape and an amount.
