The Life of a Paleontologist

To launch Year One’s new English book, “Stone Girl, Bone Girl”, this week we all pretended to be Mary Anning – the most famous British Paleontologist from Lyme Regis.  First we discussed what tools and equipment a fossil finder would need.  The children had so many wonderful suggestions including a chisel, magnifying glass and brushes.  Next we put on our wellies and went to the soil beds to find the fossils.  We talked about how we needed to dig the soil carefully as fossils are delicate and can easily break.  We compared this to Mary Anning and how it took her days of painstaking excavation to unearth her famous discovery – an ichthyosaurus.  After we excavated our fossils we put them into our class Dinosaur Museum for further examination.
