Classification

Amongst the preparation for SATs this week, Year 6 enjoyed a science lesson classifying animals in Science.

Over the last couple of weeks, the children have been learning about the classification of living things. Initially, they thought about the seven characteristics of living things – using the mnemonic MRS NERG to remember those characteristics of Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Nutrition, Excretion, Reproduction and Growth. They then studied how Linneus had created classification routes and the Latin names for some animals.

IN this session, they created branching databases, or classification keys. This involved using YES/NO questions to separate the different animals they were given until each one had a distinct question that identified it. The chidlren enjoyed the challenge and found some of the questions easier to create than others.
