In Computing, Year Two have been learning about how computers work. They programmed robots, which have a computer inside of them, to follow a set of instructions.
To begin, the children practised following a set of instructions. They quickly realised that if the instructions weren’t specific, it was difficult to follow them correctly. Knowing this, they then took it turns to play the role of a robot, following instructions to move from one part of the classroom to another. This was tricky as they could only use certain key words (forwards, backwards, turn left and right) and had to consider how to avoid obstacles.
Next, they explored what would happen if they used the same set of instructions but in a different order to program a robot. The boys and girls concluded that even though the instructions were the same, the outcome would be different.
Finally, the children programmed the BeeBots to move from one location to another on a themed map. Before they entered the code, they had to write down the instructions they needed to give. They then programmed the robot to see whether their prediction was successful or whether it needed to be adapted. The children thoroughly enjoyed programming their BeeBot to move around the artwork of Vincent van Gogh, London in 1666 and even the seven continents.
