Evaluating Tension in Oranges in No Man’s Land!

This week, the children in Year 5 have completed their second Reading Week of Oranges in No Man’s Land.

Today, the children read Chapters 14 and 15, where Ayesha is taken back across No Man’s Land in a UN ambulance after bravely retrieving Granny’s medicine. The children were given quotes from the chapters and were asked to evaluate the level of tension at different points within them. They discussed their ideas with their classmates, recognising that some people had differing opinions.

After ranking the amount of tension on a scale, the children then wrote a brief explanation of why they had chosen that level, using their knowledge of the events within the book. They understood that Ayesha would have experienced varying levels of tension throughout the chapter and during her journey back across the Green Line.
