Year 3 have been busy learning about rural and urban areas as part of their geography topic. They began by exploring what these terms mean and identifying rural and urban areas from photographs. They then compared old and modern maps of Harlow Green, discovering how our surroundings have changed over time from a rural landscape into the urban area we see today. The children were eager to point out places they recognised.
The children then learned about different types of land use, such as residential, community, retail, medical and recreational spaces. They went on a walk around the local area to spot these features for themselves and discuss what they could see. Back in the classroom, the boys and girls are now going to create their own sketch maps of the local area to show how the land has been used.
