This afternoon, the school choir visited Gateshead Civic Centre to perform in a Citizenship Ceremony.
It was a very formal occasion which took place in the council chamber. Before the ceremony, the children were lucky enough to have their photograph taken with the Mayor in the chamber. The main part of the ceremony was where each of the citizens in turn stood up to pledge their oath to become British Citizens and allegiance to the King, before receiving a certificate from the Mayor. Speeches were also given by the Mayor and also the Lord Lieutenant who is the representative of His Majesty the King in Tyne and Wear to welcome the new citizens to Gateshead. During the ceremony, the Superintendent Registrar introduced the school and then two of the year six children from choir stood up and introduced the songs. The choir performed Blinded by Your Grace by Stormzy and Symphony by Clean Bandit. Both songs sounded fantastic and the children were praised by numerous people afterwards, including the Mayor, on how well they performed. The ceremony was concluded with the National Anthem and after the Mayor left the chambers, the children were given some very tasty cookies and some juice which they all enjoyed. Well done choir – your behaviour and singing were equally brilliant, you should be very proud of yourselves.
