In Computing, Year Two have been learning all about Information Technology (IT). They found out that information technology is a computer or something that works with a computer.
To begin, the children worked with a partner to name lots of different devices, including a laptop, camera and smart speaker. The boys and girls discovered that not all of the devices were computers but they were examples of information technology.
Next, the children thought about IT in school. They came up with lots of great examples such as the interactive whiteboard and the iPads. The children then sorted the devices into whether they could help you to do a job, could be used to talk to someone or could be played on. When thinking about which devices you could talk to people on, the boys and girls were encouraged to think about the different ways we can communicate with one another – via phone or Class Dojo. The children quickly realised that a lot of the devices could fit into more than one category. For example, a laptop is used for work, communication and play.
Thinking about the devices they had identified, Year Two were asked which jobs involved the use information technology. The children had lots of great ideas including a teacher, doctor or scientist. However, they were quite surprised to learn that even farmers and gardeners use IT as part of their job.
