The Tunnel

This week Year Two found out what their new book for this half term would be. They received a special parcel which contained clues to their new story. The children were very excited and were keen to start unwrapping the parcel straight away!

After unwrapping the first layer, the children saw a book. The boys and girls noticed that there was a witch in the picture. Many of the children predicted that their new story may be similar to Hansel and Gretel which also had a witch in. Some of the children also thought that there might be a queen in the story because they could see one in the picture book. The children predicted that the witch might put a spell on somebody.

After unwrapping more layers, the children saw some legs.  Some of the children noticed that this was similar to the illustration in Hansel and Gretel when the witch was pushed into the oven. This made the children think that our new story may be a sequel to Hansel and Gretel. Others noticed that the person in the picture was wearing red and they predicted that the story may be about Little Red Riding Hood.

The children continued to unwrap more layers and discovered that their story was called ‘The Tunnel’. They predicted that the children may go through the tunnel to a new land and that they may encounter some danger there. The boys and girls discovered that this story is by Anthony Browne, just like the version of Hansel and Gretel that they looked at last term and they were therefore keen to see if there were any similarities between the two stories.  They were very excited to start reading and they have enjoyed exploring more of the book this week.
