Rocks

In our Science block, the children have been learning about different types of rocks and how they are formed.  The children have identified three types of natural rock: igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic. We have explored how each rock is formed and the children were excited to learn that igneous rocks are formed from volcanoes and that some rocks take millions of years to form.

While looking at the rocks, the children observed different characteristics of the rocks, for example, the sedimentary rocks had visible layers, while the igneous rocks had holes. The children discovered that igneous rocks develop holes in them when the rocks cool down.

During our Science lessons, the students have been able to link their knowledge of rocks with ancient Egypt, as they knew that limestone (a sedimentary rock) was used to build the pyramids.
