Telling the time

This week Year One have had fun discovering how to measure time and how to tell the time.  Initially we practised using the terms before and after and discussed activities that we do before school such as having our breakfast and activities we do after school such as reading a bed time story.  After we focused on learning the days of the week and the months of the year.  Follow this link to listen to the months of the year song that we have been learning.

Months of the Year Song

Later on in the week the pupils learnt that there are 60 seconds in one minute and 30 seconds in half a minute.  We investigated how many times we could write our name, how many star jumps we could do and how many cubes we could use to build a tower in one minute.  We estimated first and we were surprised at how our results were so different from our guesses.  Finally we have been learning to tell the time to the hour.  Everyone made a clock with and hour hand and a minute hand and the children practised moving the hands to the correct time.
