Terrific Time

In Maths, Year Two have been learning how to tell the time. They learned that there are 60 seconds in a minute, 60 minutes in an hour and 30 minutes in half an hour. Before reading the time on a clock, the children had to learn the difference between the minute hand and the hour hand.

Learning the time means learning lots of new words, including o’clock and half past. The children quickly learned that when the minute hand is pointing to 12, it is o’clock and when it is pointing to 6, it is half past.

Next, it was time to move on to quarter past and quarter to. This was quite tricky as the children had to know that when the minute is between 12 and 6, we read the time past the hour. However, when it is between 6 and 12, we read the time to the hour. Nevertheless, Year Two rose to the challenge and could read, write and match the time perfectly.

Finally, the children learned to read the time past the hour in five minute intervals. The children used their knowledge of the five times table to read five past, ten past, 20 past and 25 past the hour. This was a real challenge but, as always, the boys and girls worked hard to succeed.
