Life in the Past

Over the past two weeks, Year One has been learning about the past. The children firstly learnt what the past is and what the subject of history means. We looked at toys from long ago such as a spinning top, a teddy bear, marbles and a rocking horse. Then everyone made their own cup and ball. We even tried to play the game. We had a lot of fun. In the classroom, the children have enjoyed playing in our Victorian school room, using slates and chalk. The pupils have also been learning about holidays in the past and comparing them to seaside holidays today. We learnt that the Victorians thought that the seaside was good for them and they didn’t travel on aeroplanes. Using historical photos, the children investigated how the Victorians wore a different style of bathing suit and even used a bathing machine, pulled by a horse to reach the sea. Fortunately, everyone was glad to hear that the Victorians loved fish and chips and ice cream just like we do today.
