Home Learning for Miss Rutherford’s Class

Hello everyone,

I hope everyone is well.  As the children are self-isolating and will be absent from school on Monday 2nd, Tuesday 3rd and Wednesday 4th of November,  I have set some tasks to complete at home which link to the work Mrs Hopkins’ class will be doing.

Our topic this term is Dinosaurs with a focus on the text ‘Stone Girl Bone Girl’, which is about Mary Anning, the Palaeontologist.

Linked to our topic, I have set phonics, reading, writing, maths, science and spelling tasks which are explained below.

You will also find some supporting materials to help with the learning.  Along with the activities, please share books with your children so that they can engage in reading for pleasure. You can sign up to www.oxfordowl.co.uk to access some age-appropriate books. Remember, there are activities to complete on Numbots too.

Monday

Session 1 – Phonics

Practise reading and writing the ‘ng’ sound, and practise saying the rhyme ‘a thing on a string’. Have a go at reading these words:

  • wing, bang, sing, thing.

Practise saying a sentence with each word in. Challenge – choose one word to write in a sentence.

What I’m Looking For:

  • Fred talk each word.
  • Use a capital letter at the beginning of your sentence.
  • Use gaps between words.

Share Stone Girl Bone Girl with your child. Read pages 8-11 and answer the questions at the bottom of each page. This can be discussed verbally.

Session 3 – Maths

Play ‘Ladybird Spots’.  Select ‘Ordering’ in the right hand corner. Play both the ‘smallest to largest’ and the ‘largest to smallest’ games. Select numbers 1-10. Have a go at ordering the ladybird’s in the correct order by counting the spots.

Session 4 – Science

Watch this video all about the four seasons.  Once you have watched the video, have a go at the quiz underneath. You need to put the seasons in the correct order.

Session 5 – Spellings

Practise the spellings listed below– look, cover, say, write and check. Write each spelling three times then write ‘no’ and ‘jam’ in a sentence.

  • no, jam, zip, yes, wet, vet.

Tuesday

Session 4 – Science

What can you remember about the four seasons? Discuss with a grown up. Watch the video again and draw one thing you know about each season e.g. snow on trees in Winter, flowers growing in Spring, sun shining in Summer and the leaves falling off the trees in Autumn.  You can record on the worksheet below labelled ‘The Four Seasons’ or on a piece of paper.

We are learning to give an opinion about a story. Complete ‘Wednesday Writing Task’. This can be completed on the worksheet or completed on a piece of paper by drawing the appropriate face and writing a sentence underneath explaining why that face has been chosen. Use the sound card to help.
