Columns of Counters.

In Maths over the last two weeks we have been exploring formal methods for adding and subtracting.  We always start with counters, so we can see where we have to carry numbers or exchange.  Using ‘concrete’ materials helps the children visualise the calculation, before we move onto doing them without equipment.

Today we were doing some column subtraction, and looking at where the exchanged number came from so that we could complete the calculation.

The children have been amazing at not only catching up and covering gaps from last year, but also picking up the new skills taught in Year 4.
