Friendship Soup in our Forest School

We continue to explore collaboration and teamwork in our Forest School sessions.

This week the children thought about what friendship means to them. What do they look for in a friend and what do they give to their friends in return. Their challenge this week was to collaborate with their team to find natural materials to represent the aspects of friendship that they feel are important. These ingredients were then mixed together to make their very own Friendship Soup. For the youngest children there was a definite lean towards fun and playfulness. Whereas the older children looked for trust, honesty, forgiveness, maybe a scattering of arguments. It was interesting to see how they decided on quantities for their recipe, some having cupful’s of craziness others only a pinch. Red berries were used for love by some and anger for others. We had spiky plants like rosemary used for fun but for spikiness by others.

During the reflection the children had the opportunity to explain not only what they’d chosen and why it was important to their team but also if they had demonstrated these characteristics to each other during the session. Reflective practice is a feature of each session and aims to ensure learners and practitioners can understand their achievements, develop emotional intelligence and plan for the future.

The Community Principle: Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for development and learning.
