Exciting Explorers

In History, Year Two have been learning about explorers from different periods of history. Did you know an explorer is a person who makes journeys into the unknown and makes records of their travels?

First, the children found out about the astronaut Neil Armstrong. The boys and girls watched video footage of the moon landing in 1969 and found out that Neil Armstrong was the first person to ever walk on the moon. They were very interested to see how the astronauts explored the moon’s surface. They also learnt about Neil Armstrong’s early life and how he trained to become an astronaut.

Next, the boys and girls learnt about another astronaut, Tim Peake. They discovered that he was the first British astronaut to visit the International Space Station and that he did experiments while he was there. The children made comparisons between Tim Peake and Neil Armstrong and realised that both had been pilots before training to be astronauts. They also identified that Tim Peake had been in space for 186 days whereas Neil Armstrong’s trip to the moon only lasted for 8 days.

After that, Year Two learnt about Christopher Columbus. He was one of the first Europeans to travel to the Americas, although he was actually looking for a route to the Indies.

Finally, the boys and girls thought about how significant individuals throughout history are remembered. They then designed a stamp to commemorate someone of their choice. They thought carefully about what made that person significant and how this could be represented.
