To kick start the Summer topic, Adventure Awaits!, Nursery have been exploring mini-beasts in Forest School.
We started the week reading the story ‘Mad about Minibeasts’ where we learnt about different mini-beasts and where they live. We found out lots of different information and decided to see what we could find on our school grounds. We first thought about trying to find dark places the bugs might hide. We are so lucky that our Forest School environment is scattered with strategically placed materials to encourage a variety of creepy crawlies to make their homes.
We could collect any finds into our bug collection pots, where we observed the creatures and tried to find the names in an identification book. Some interesting finds were; millipedes, centipedes, woodlice, spiders, a beetle, slugs, empty snail shells (but no live ones) and worms.
We also went to our extensive bug hotel, emptying a room at a time, carefully unwrapping the contents to find baby bugs tucked up in the small folds of the cardboard. We tried to race the slugs we found but found they moved far too slow for us, so we went off to hunt for insects that were far more interesting. A very lively day in Nursery!
