This week in Reception, we have been busy learning all about the five senses: sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell. Our focus has been on understanding how we use our senses every day to explore the world around us.

We began our learning journey by reading My Five Senses by Margaret Miller, a lovely book that introduced us to each of the senses in a simple and engaging way. To help us visualise the senses, we used Mr Potato Head, adding new body parts each day to represent the different senses  including: eyes for sight, ears for hearing, a nose for smell, hands for touch, and a mouth for taste. Throughout the week, the children took part in a variety of exciting, hands-on activities. We played a “smell pots” game where we had to guess the different scents, and we used our listening skills to identify sounds in a “guess the sound” game. Our eyes were tested during a “what’s missing?” game with moving toys, encouraging us to observe closely and remember details. On our sensory walk, we explored textures in nature and used descriptive words to explain how things felt. One of the highlights was playing with gloop made from cornflour and water which was a fun, messy way to explore the sense of touch! We also created mini volcanoes using bicarbonate of soda and vinegar which was a wonderful way to engage multiple senses at once! To explore taste, we sampled a variety of fruits and vegetables, and had thoughtful discussions about our likes and dislikes. Through all of these activities, the children have deepened their understanding of their bodies and the world around them.
