The Gruffalo in Reception

This week in Reception, we have been reading The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. The children loved joining in with the repeated phrases in the story and were amazed that the Gruffalo was scared of the tiny mouse.

In the story, the mouse tells the animals what the Gruffalo’s favourite foods are.  So, outdoors, the children collected ingredients to make the Gruffalo recipes from the story in the mud kitchen. We discussed what each partner was going to make, some children wanted to make scrambled snake, some children were making Gruffalo crumble, while others were making owl ice cream and mice sandwiches. We voted as a class which dish sounded the most delicious, however, some children thought they all sounded very unappetising!

In the classroom, we had a variety of Gruffalo- themed activities, for example, the children experimented with making clay Gruffalo sculptures and used materials, such as, spaghetti and art straws to create the prickles on the Gruffalo’s back and his terrible claws. The children also enjoyed painting portraits of the Gruffalo.

For Literacy, the children had a go at writing sentences using adjectives to describe what the Gruffalo looks like.

Article 31: We all have the right to take part in creative activities.
