Life cycles

This week in Nursery the children have focused on life cycles. The children started this week by listening to a story called ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’. The children then discussed what happened during the story and created a story map, which was used to help them recall the key events in the story. On Wednesday, the children used their story map to recap what happened during the life cycle of the butterfly and then they completed a simple diagram to reflect this. They also had lots of fun acting out the life cycle of the butterfly. After that, they got a special visit from some real butterflies! Later in the week, the children briefly talked about examples of living things and discovered that all living things go through a life cycle. Following the interest of the children, they then learned what happens during a frog’s lifecycle. In the creative area, the children made their own butterflies by painting half of a butterfly and folding it over to print on the other side. They have also printed with marshmallows to make caterpillars and threaded painted pasta onto string to make caterpillar necklaces. In the playdough area, the children have enjoyed making their own pizza bases, adding their toppings and putting them into the pizza oven. While accessing the sandpit, the children have hunted for butterflies and caterpillars under the logs, flowers, petals and leaves. In the reading corner, the children have enjoyed using the story props linked to the story to act it out. This week the children that are going to Reception in September have also had their stay and play session in Reception. Thank you to everyone who came to visit Reception on Thursday. I hope you all found it helpful to meet the new teachers and see the classroom. During their PE session, the children have had their second visit from Little Movers and have been on the school field numerous times to practise the races for Sports Day.
