The Very Hungry Caterpillar

We have had a lovely week in Nursery and been very busy! Together we have carried on exploring minibeasts and have been exploring ‘caterpillars’. The children have really engaged with the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and together we have discussed the lifecycle of a butterfly: egg – caterpillar – caccoon/chrylisis – butterfly. In the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, he ate lots of different types of fruits and foods on different days of the week. We have been retelling the story by trying to remember what day he ate which foods and how many, as well as trying our hardest to remember the days of the week in order. The nursery children then had a fruit tasting day where we explored loads of different fruits, together we cut them open to see what was inside, and then tried them and described what we thought they were like using our sense of sight, touch and taste. We tried: mango, kiwi, honeydew melon, watermelon, grapes and plums. Whilst eating the fruits we read Handa’s Surprise to discover different fruits we may not have seen before including guavas, passionfruits and avocados. In our planning time we have made caterpillars in the art area by stamping potato mashers and toilet rolls, we have even made our own caterpillar names by putting a sound in each segment of the caterpillar. We love the stories The Very Hungry Caterpillar and we love the story ‘There’s a tiny caterpillar on a leaf’.
