The children in Year 2 enjoyed a visit from Mel who works in the STEM team at Northumbria University. She began the workshop by asking the children to think about how they could look after the environment. She talked about fossil fuels and how they are found underground. The children were then posed a question. ‘Which carrier bag is the most sustainable?’ The children were asked to investigate three bags which were made out of plastic, cotton and paper. They shared their ideas in their groups and made their own prediction by placing their counter on a particular bag. The boys and girls had fun testing the bags by stretching, then ripping each material. They also counted the number of tins of food that each bag could hold without it breaking. Finally, they used pipettes to drop water onto each fabric to see whether it was water repellent. The workshop was great fun and we enjoyed welcoming Mel into our school.
