During science lessons this half-term, Year 6 have been studying the circulatory system.
The children have been taught about the heart and the lungs as the main organs and have considered the journey of a red blood cell each time the heart pumps blood around the body. This week, the children were given the opportunity to see what a heart actually looks like and, if brave enough, to touch one too.
The hearts were lamb’s hearts and were ordered from a specialist school’s science site. The children were talked to about the need to be hygienic and mature as this is the start of biology in the way that they will study at secondary school. It was excellent to see how enthusiastic the children were and adjectives like cold, slimy, and ‘weird’ were used in discussions across the class. Experiences like this really add to the children’s understanding of a topic in a way that a simple diagram can’t.
