This week in Guided Reading, we tried something a bit different – a programme called Reader’s Theatre!
We used the scene from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory where Charlie finds the Golden Ticket. First, the children listened to the text being read aloud so they could hear how fluency, expression and intonation help bring a story to life. Throughout the week, they worked in groups of three to discuss why the text should be read in a certain way and how it could make the listener feel the excitement, shock or tension in the moment.
The groups then marked up their scripts, thinking carefully about how they would perform it – where to pause for effect, which words needed extra emphasis, and how to change their voices for different characters. It was fantastic to see everyone collaborating, sharing ideas and supporting one another.
On Friday, each group performed their part of the story for the class. Afterwards, we reflected on what made each performance effective. The children gave thoughtful feedback about clear speech, expressive reading, and how silence can help build suspense.
