In Computing, Year Two have been learning all about Information Technology – a computer or something that works with a computer.
The boys and girls identified a range of examples of Information Technology including iPads, laptops and printers. To demonstrate their knowledge, the children drew an example of Information Technology and an example of something that wasn’t Information Technology (e.g. a pencil or book).
Next, Year Two thought about the IT we use in school. The children were able to name computers, the interactive whiteboard and even a projector. They then discussed what these devices are used for. With their partner, the children sorted the devices into whether they could be used for work, to talk to someone or to play. The boys and girls identified that many of the devices had multiple uses and some could even fit into all three categories.
During this unit, the children have also learned how they can stay safe when using the internet. An avatar is a digital image that can be used instead of a photograph online. The boys and girls looked at a range of avatars and discussed which were the safest. They decided that choosing a character that looks nothing like them, like an animal, would be difficult to link back to the person it represents. The children then drew their own avatars and attempted to guess which picture belonged to who. After numerous guesses, it became clear that identifying the owner of each animal avatar was difficult, demonstrating how effective they can be in protecting our identity online.
