This week, Year 5 had the fantastic opportunity to visit the Theatre Royal in Newcastle to watch a live performance of Pig Heart Boy, a stage adaptation of the novel by Malorie Blackman.
For some of us, this was our first time seeing a live play in such a grand and historic theatre, and the children had a fantastic time. The atmosphere in the Theatre Royal was amazing, and we were all excited to find out what the story was about.
Pig Heart Boy follows the story of Cameron, a teenage boy who becomes the first person to receive a heart transplant from a pig. The performance was emotional, powerful, and thought-provoking. It raised important questions about science, ethics, friendship, and how people treat others who are seen as “different.” Even though we haven’t read the book yet, the play gave us a strong sense of the story and the issues it explores.
We’ll be reading the novel after half term, and seeing the play first has made us even more interested to dive into the book. It will be exciting to compare the story on the page with what we saw on stage, and to explore the characters and themes in more detail.
