Perfect Pasties

This week, the Year 6 children have made vegetable pasties in the air fryers which they all enjoyed!

As part of the history work this term, Year 6 have been learning about coal mining. The children learnt that miners ate pasties because they were a durable, self-contained, and  a portable meal that provided high-calories during long shifts, often designed to be eaten without utensils. The thick crimped crust served as a handle for dirty or arsenic-covered hands and allowed them to be eaten in dark, damp conditions.

There was great excitement in both Year 6 classrooms as the children were given the chance to peel, chop, slice and dice a range of vegetables to create their own pasty. The children created their own pasty from a choice of vegetables including potatoes, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, sweetcorn, onion, peas and even baked beans. Lots of the children decided to finish off their pasty with some cheese. It was lovely to see the co-operation between the children. At the end of the session, the children were able to eat their product– with some saying they would make the pasties again at home.
