Reading is a key component of the Harlow Green curriculum and World Book Day is an integral part of the school calendar where we celebrate books and a love of reading.
The focus of World Book Day this year was ‘Reading for Pleasure.’ All of the children were invited to come into school dressed as a character from a book and to bring in a book that they enjoy reading to discuss with their classmates. During the day, all classes were visited by ‘Captain Raggybeard’ who told them a story about the day the Angel of the North ran away and then a story based upon pirates and mermaids. The children were spellbound and came out full of chatter about how the storyteller engaged them with his expression and the voices that he used.
Throughout the day, there have been various activities around school where children have designed vegetable villains, created book tokens and book marks, taken part in quizzes and designed their own reading bookshelf. It has been lovely to see the enthusiasm in all classrooms and a huge thank-you to all of the parents and carers for the effort made with the costumes – the children looked amazing.
