Piece by Piece: Rebuilding the Iron Man

Year Three’s English lessons got off to an exciting start this week with a special book launch based on The Iron Man by Ted Hughes.

The children began by listening carefully to the opening of the story and identified important clues that reveal what the Iron Man looks like and discussed how these details help the reader build a clear image in their mind.

To bring the story to life, the children discovered that the Iron Man had “fallen from the cliff” and his metal parts had been scattered around the school grounds! As a class, they eagerly searched the yard to find the missing pieces and worked cooperatively to rebuild him. They then compared our representation of the Iron Man with different illustrations and book cover designs.

The lesson ended by reading the final part of Chapter One, which sparked lots of excitement for what is to come and the children generated questions which they would like to answer as we continue reading the story.
