This week, Year 5 have been busy writing sentence stackers in preparation for their next piece of writing based on The Explorer.
Today, the children were introduced to the language feature similes. They learnt that a simile compares one thing to another using the words ‘as’ or ‘like’. After identifying examples of similes in a model paragraph, the children took part in a fun activity using simile cards, such as ‘as hot as’, ‘as cold as’ and ‘as big as’.
Working together, the children generated their own creative ideas to complete the similes, with some linking their ideas to events and settings from The Explorer. There were some fantastic and imaginative responses!
To extend their learning further, the children created sentence openers and began expanding their similes using subordinate clauses, including conjunctions such as ‘because’. This helped them to build more detailed and interesting sentences.
This practice will support the children in their next lesson on Monday, when they will continue developing their writing using similes.
