Emergency… Fantastic Fire Engines

The children in Year 2 have been working hard to design and make their own fire engines.  Firstly, they looked at some toy fire engines and talked about the features, describing which ones they liked and also providing reasons why.  They enjoyed drawing their own engines and labelling features such as the ladder, wheels, hose and light.  They also found out about  specific parts that help the vehicle to move, in particular the chassis and the axle.  The children were given their own cardboard chassis to build into a cuboid and then they attached two wooden axles and four wheels.  Then, there was an opportunity to get creative to add the hose, windows and lights using glue, scissors and different coloured paper.  Finally, the boys and girls added a wind up mechanism using a short length of doweling and some string to make the ladder move up and down.   Well done!
