Dunkirk Descriptive Narrative

This half-term, Year 6 have been reading ‘Tales of World War Two’, a book containing true stories from the war, within their English lessons. This book has allowed them to learn about real events and the effects they had on people in the war.

The section on Dunkirk was very informative and really got the children to think about how soldiers would have felt in some of their worst moments. They looked at different sentence stackers that would be suitable for a descriptive extract. When writing these sentences, the children worked hard to be emotive and descriptive and to bring alive the sailor’s and soldier’s feelings. New punctuation, a semi-colon and colon were introduced to the children, which they were able to use in sentences and writing.  When writing, the children wrote in third person, and this allowed them to describe from another’s point of view. It was pleasing to see how hard the children worked on this piece of narrative description, and their end products were lovely to read.
