Over the past two weeks, Year 6 have been learning techniques to improve their sketching.
The children started off by looking at the different gradings of pencils and how they can produce different tones and shades. they then used pencils to practise shading techniques including hatching, stippling and blurring. The blurring was a particular favourite – although it resulted in some very messy hands.
When the children were told they were going to be drawing a realistic apple – and shown the image – many expressed their concern that it was too difficult. However, by working step-by-step, the children were amazed by their results. After this, the children worked on compositions to show reflection in water, shadows and movement. We are now looking forward to seeing their final pieces where they combine these skills and choose the techniques that they like best.
