Exploring Batik in Year 5

This half term, Year 5 have been learning all about Batik, a traditional art form that uses wax and dye to create beautiful patterns and designs on fabric.

We began by exploring the history of Batik, discovering its cultural importance and how it has been used for centuries to tell stories through art. Early examples often included scenes of mountains, trees, and hunting, showing the close connection between Batik designs and the natural world.

As part of our work, the children also learned about constructing and reconstructing materials. They applied this knowledge to create stunning aerial views of rivers, using a variety of materials such as card, tissue paper and crepe paper. Each piece was creative, colourful and full of texture – a fantastic celebration of the children’s imagination and skills.

Next week, we will begin the exciting stage of designing our very own Batiks, which will then be transformed into unique pieces of artwork. We can’t wait to see the children’s designs come to life!

Article 31: We all have the right to take part in cultural and creative activities.
