This week, Year 6 have been learning about life on the Home Front and the impact war had on society.
The focus in lessons this week has been on the role of women. We considered the ‘traditional’ role of women prior to the war as housewives and mothers and how this was even the focus in school, compared to men who needed to learn skills for ‘working life.’ However, the war changed this as men were conscripted into the army and women were then thrust into factories, farms and the armed forces to ensure that the country was fully mobilised for the war effort. The children produced their own ‘Horrible Histories’ style pages and had great fun being creative to show the jobs that they did and the propaganda posters that were produced to encourage them to join different sectors of the war effort.
