Gruesome Grendel Descriptions

This half term, Year 5 have been diving into the epic Anglo-Saxon legend ‘Beowulf’. The children have been fascinated by the dramatic battles and monstrous characters, especially the terrifying Grendel.

As part of their English lessons, pupils created their own character descriptions of the gruesome beast. They used ambitious vocabulary and powerful figurative language to make their writing as scary, vivid, and spine-chilling as possible. From twisted claws and jagged teeth to evil, hate-filled eyes, their descriptions really brought the monster to life on the page.

To take their ideas even further, the children then drew their own versions of Grendel, based on their writing. Each drawing was wonderfully unique, showing just how differently Grendel could be imagined. Some were truly frightening, others grotesque and gruesome – but all were filled with creativity and imagination.

We are so proud of the children’s effort and enthusiasm. Their work shows just how powerful storytelling can be when we let our imaginations run wild!
