Puzzling Place Value

In Maths, Year Two have started to learn all about Place Value – the value a digit holds in a number.

The boys and girls began their lesson counting in tens. They marched, hopped and jumped while reading the multiples aloud.

During the lesson, the children were shown a set of objects and were asked to count them. However, the boys and girls said the objects were difficult to count as they weren’t arranged/organised in a particular way. The children then looked at the objects arranged in groups of ten and concluded that that made them easier to count.

The boys and girls were then given their own set of objects to count including straws, cubes and counters. With their partner, they organised their objects into groups of ten to help them to find the total. Next, the children were given some additional objects to count. Again, they had to organise the objects into groups of ten and then add the amount they had left. The children were able to recognise that if they had 6 tens and 4 ones, their number was 64.
